Aromatherapy For Babies
By Liz Santher, Fri Dec 9th
Before reading this article keep in mind that most doctors don'trecommend the use of aromatherapy on babies that re less thanthree months old. This is because the nasal and skin tissues ofan infant are very sensitive and easily irritated by anythingbut the blandest of substances. Once your baby is past that ageconsult with your doctor to make sure that the use of essentialoils is right for your child.
Traditionally essential are used to purify the air in anursery and calm and relax the infant. The safest and gentlestway to introduce essential into the nursery is to put theoils in a diffuser so the molecules of the oil are dispersedthrough the air. You can also dilute about ten drops of the oilin a bottle of distilled water and mist that around the nurseryand the baby's bedding. Remember always that if your baby startssneezing, tearing or fretting that it may not be time tointroduce aromatherapy into your baby's life.
For best results try to choose high quality oils. Theinexpensive stuff is cut with crude substances and alcohols andcan be overwhelming to the delicate system of a baby.
Try to choose that are organically grown as they areusually of the highest quality. Avoid purchasing in plasticor clear bottles as light and other factors can cause the oil todegrade and lose efficacy. The highest quality aromatherapy oilsare usually sold in dark brown bottles that protect them fromdisintegrating light rays.
There are several that are highly recommended for use withbabies. Some are mood enhancers, some are room disinfectants andmany are a combination of both.
Lavender and roman chamomile are the best two that you canuse in a mist or a diffuser to calm a fussy baby. A blend ofvanilla and orange is a favorite blend for mothers who justwant to keep the baby in a happy mood as both have thereputation of being mood elevators for children. Peppermint orspearmint are stimulating to the brain. and may help babieslearn faster.
You can also add a few drops of chamomile or lavender oil to ababy's bath to help prepare them physically and psychologicallyfor naptime. Keep in mind though that all added to a bathmust first be generously diluted in carrier oil such as almondor olive oil. Never pour essential oil drops directly into abath as that can irritate a baby's sensitive skin.
The safest aromatherapy to use as disinfectants andpurifiers for the air are geranium, lavender and eucalyptus.Lavender sprayed directly onto your babies bedding and allowedto dry before placing the baby back in the crib also helps getrid of allergens and dust mites. Eucalyptus is best used forbabies who have a cold or respiratory problems.
Used in a cautious manner, essential can not only help youcalm and cheer your infant, but they can also mask anyunpleasant odors that are always a part of a mother's life.
